Amanda Canning concentrates her legal practice in employment and civil litigation. She specializes in matters involving police misconduct, protected class discrimination, wrongful terminations, and wage and hour violations. Prior to joining SDSHHH, Ms. Canning practiced plaintiff-side labor and employment law at Schwartz, Steinsapir, Dohrmann & Sommers, primarily representing union workers in employment disputes.

Ms. Canning received her Juris Doctorate from the University of California, Los Angeles, with a certificate in Public Interest Law and Policy in 2006, and her bachelor's degree from the University of California, Berkeley in 2000. At UCLA School of Law, Ms. Canning founded the American Constitution Society UCLA chapter and recently sat on the Board of Directors for the national organization, a 10,000 member nationwide progressive law and policy nonprofit. She was also the Chief Production Editor of the UCLA Journal on International Law and Foreign Affairs and the Chair of the Immigration Law Society.

Ms. Canning has been a human rights advocate in Mexico, representing victims of government torture, and in Costa Rica, working on cases involving disappearances, forced sterilization, and government violence before the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. Prior to her legal career, Ms. Canning was a Jesse Unruh Assembly Fellow and Legislative Aide to the then Speaker pro Tem of the California State Legislature, focusing largely on issues of foster care, affordable housing, and education. At UC Berkeley, Ms. Canning was elected Vice President of the student body in which she assisted in drafting admissions policies following the repeal of affirmative action in the State of California.
